Lawrence Frederick Heileman
HEILEMAN, Lawrence Frederick (Larry) Formerly of Cohasset, passed away at Queen Anne Nursing Home in Hingham on August 18, 2011 after a long illness. Larry was born July 1, 1946, the son of the late Lawrence and Anne Heileman. He grew up in Danbury, Connecticut and attended the Wooster School. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1969 with a B.S. in Industrial Administration and was immediately drafted into the Army, where he was stationed in Viet Nam serving as an Army medic with the 25th Medical Battalion. Following his honorable discharge, Larry returned briefly to the States and then lived in Tokyo, Japan where he took classes at Sofia University and worked as a copywriter for NHK, Radio Japan. He also traveled throughout Japan and to South Korea. Before returning to the U.S. in 1974, Larry traveled extensively in Southeast Asia (Taipei, Hong Kong, Laos, Cambodia, Burma and Thailand), an area that held a great fascination for him the rest of his life. Upon his return, Larry earned an MBA from Boston University's Graduate School of Management. He was the manager of inside sales for an electronics components manufacturer in New Hampshire before joining WGBH, Boston's Public Television Station, in 1984. Larry started his career at WGBH as a member of the telemarketing department, and during the next 10 years also worked in areas of cash management, marketing analysis, and marketing administration. He played key roles in marketing research and analysis, expense and revenue management, and developing on-air pledge marketing strategies. WGBH fans may remember him best for his on-air role wearing a green eyeshade and arm garters as Larry the Money Man. Larry left WGBH in 1994 to work at PBS headquarters in Alexandria, VA developing new pledge programming for the national system. He then became Director of Development for WHYY in Philadelphia and returned to the Boston station in 2000 as Director of Membership. Larry remained at WGBH until overtaken by illness in 2006. During his time at WGBH, Larry met and later married the love of his life, Jo-An Rolfe Kilgore. They enjoyed living in Cohasset near the ocean and shared enthusiasm for the performing arts. He was an avid fan of Broadway musicals and, especially enjoyed the local groups where Jo-An performs frequently. Larry had a quiet manner that belied his deep intellect and wry wit. Even during his extended period of illness, Larry kept up with public TV programs, was a faithful listener of "Standing Room Only" on WERS, and would astound and entertain all with his quick responses to Jeopardy trivia and knowledge of arcane facts. He was deeply loved by his family and friends and made a lasting imprint on their lives. Larry is survived by his wife, Jo-An, her two children, Andrew Kilgore and Rebecca Liebman, and four grandchildren, Rio Kilgore, Raven Kilgore, Josie Liebman and Jesse Liebman. He is also survived by his sisters, Anne Clubine and Christy Belvin, four nieces and nephews, Martha Gschneidner, Betsy Clubine, Dan Belvin and Doug Belvin, nine great nephews and nieces, and his sister-in-law, Helen Ham. A private service will be held at a later date. Contributions in his name may be made to WERS (Standing Room Only) 120 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116 or Friends of the Paragon Carousel, P.O.
