Luther Eldredge

A legend has passed

Luther Marston Eldredge passed away on December 11. Luther was born in 1927 on Water Street in Chatham. His family later moved to Eastham overlooking the town Cove, where he learned to love fishing with his grandfather Luther Marston Ryder.

He joined the Navy in WWll at 17 and received an honorable discharge in 1946. Returning to the Cape, he worked as a lineman and traveled from Canada to Virginia. Shortly after he realized his passion was for being on the ocean, and love of the sea and fishing. As a lifelong resident of Eastham and Orleans, Luther was a legend in his community-everyone knew him in the shellfishing world and beyond. He was the fisherman with the red boat that was photographed countless times and displayed in many magazines, calendars, newspapers and more. The quahogs and mussels you bought at Nauset Fish Market, were most likely caught by Luther.

Luther was a friend of Bill W. helping many gain and maintain sobriety.

He is survived by his loving wife for 34 years Marilyn Eldredge of Eastham, sons Luther (Georgette) of Martha's Vineyard; David (Sheree) of Brewster; and his daughter, Rev. Lorene Eldredge of Lakeville; half sister Carlotta Eldredge of California; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.

Luther is Predeceased in death by sisters Elizabeth Spencer and Irene Dodds; his brother Walter, (Red) Jr. ; his son William, and daughter Kathleen.
