Lyon Carter II, 77, passed away on June 15th , in Plymouth, MA, after a lengthy battle
with dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. He was a loving family man and amazing friend to so many.
Lyon was born on May 19, 1949, in Boston, MA, to Shirley and Sherb Carter. He attended Derby Academy, Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated from Duxbury High School in 1967 where he played soccer and tennis. From there, Lyon attended Tufts University and graduated in 1971 with a degree in Economics.
After college, Lyon started Carter Cranberry with his brother, Sherb. They grew the business into a successful cranberry farm selling exclusively to Ocean Spray. Lyon was immensely proud of their work and really loved being able to work outside. The cranberry farm still operates and produces cranberries for Ocean Spray annually. He was a proud member of the Cape Cod Cranberry Grower’s Association.
Lyon had his private pilot’s license and loved flying his Maule airplane all around New England. He ended up also getting his commercial pilot’s license, seaplane rating and instrument rating.
Lyon was a class act, whether hosting a tailgate for a football game at his RV or sailing the Gunhild around the open ocean, where he competed in two Marion-Bermuda races.He was always a gentleman in every way.
Lyon was an active member of the Duxbury Yacht Club where he was Secretary of the Board of Directors for years. He also gave a lot of time and effort serving on the Jordan Hospital Board of Directors. Lyon was an avid clay shooter and a proud member of both the Plymouth Rod & Gun Club as well as the Upland Sportsman’s Club. For many years, Lyon and his family hosted a Father Son Sporting Clays Tournament at his home on Snapping Turtle Lane in Kingston. Lyon built the sporting clays course on the property and around Indian Pond 30 years ago to host his favorite event of the year.
Lyon is survived by his wife of 46 years, Cynthia (Christian), their son Lyon III, wife Mary Allison, son Christian, wife Amy, as well as their four grandchildren Christian Jr (CJ),Cameron, Lyon IV, and Ainsley. The grand kids lovingly referred to him as “Bo” in reference to his alma mater, The Tufts University Jumbos. He was preceded in death by his brother Sherb. He leaves behind Sherb’s wife Paige, his sister Carol and her husband Sandy. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. Lyon was a family man through and through.
A celebration of Lyon’s life will be hosted at Southers Marsh Golf Club, 30 Southers Marsh Lane, Plymouth, MA,on Sunday, June 28th at 2pm.
