Obituary

Marion S. Lockhart, of South Yarmouth Massachusetts passed away at Cape Cod Hospital in

Hyannis on Sunday October 3, 2021, of natural causes. Born in Norwalk, CT on May 1, 1926, to

the late William J. and Ellen M. Saabye, Marion had an idyllic childhood. She spent her days

swimming, clamming, and boating in Long Island Sound, and evenings surrounded by her

parents, aunts, friends and her two beloved sisters, the late Gertrude (Saabye) Spitzer and Ellen

"Sis" (Saabye) Kirtland – collectively referred to as "the Saabye sisters".

As a young woman Marion attended Katherine Gibbs, graduating with a degree in secretarial

studies. She spoke often of the excitement of working in New York City in the 40's and taking

the train down from her home in Norwalk, how the war effort had everyone on the home front

pulling together, and the thrill of a lifetime watching the parade celebrating the end of the war as

it came up Fifth Avenue. Part of The Greatest Generation, Marion often spoke of that time when

the future wasn't certain.

On a blind date, Marion met George L. Quinn, Jr., a young navy seaman on his way to the

Pacific theater. It was love at first sight and their marriage would last 35 years. The wedding day

photo of them departing the reception in a shiny car amidst a flurry of confetti, wearing broad

smiles, is classic. Marion and George settled in North Adams where George took over his

family's business, Quinn's Paint and Wallpaper (which is still operating in other locations, now

into its 4th generation of Quinn's). Together they built a beautiful home in Stamford, Vermont

where they raised their family amidst a menagerie of animals. Quinn summers were spent at

Windsor Pond in Savoy, with winters skiing Dutch Hill in Heartwellville, Vermont. Above all

else Marion loved being a stay-at-home Mom, and she encouraged her children to pursue their

interests even if it meant she would spend most weekends traveling to horse shows, swim meets

or motorcycle races.

Following her divorce from George, Marion moved to Williamstown where she worked at the

Clark Art Conservation Lab. She enjoyed that work, particularly the personal connection she

made with the different art conservators. Presently, she reconnected with a high school friend,

Joseph Lockhart. For a second time she was swept off her feet. She and Joe were married in

1993. After a short time living at Joe's home in St. Albans, they fulfilled their dream of moving

to Cape Cod in 1995. Sadly, Joe succumbed to cancer that same year.

Marion was blessed with good health for almost all her 95 years, allowing her to be active with

her pets and golf into her late 80s. Communicating with family and friends was important, and

Marion maintained many long-distance relationships via telephone. She was never too busy to

chat. Her grandchildren knew to allow at least 30 minutes for a call with Grandma.

As all who knew her were aware, Marion was a lover of all animals, especially the weak,

disabled and abused. In particular, however, she adored her dogs, and they loved her, so much so

that her husbands and children would often muse that, when it came down to it, there was little

question that her relationship with her dogs had priority over them. She would never argue

against the point. No expense was too great if it meant keeping her pets happy and healthy.

Marion was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W. Lockhart, Lieut. Col. USAF (Ret.), and her

first husband, George L. Quinn, Jr. with whom she had four children who survive her, George L.

Quinn III (Debbie Omer), Ellen Quinn Jones (Cleveland), Diana Quinn (Mike Faya) and Laura

Quinn (Richard O'Brien). Also surviving her are eleven grandchildren and ten great-

grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at Saint Paul's on the Green, 60 East Avenue, Norwalk, CT on

Friday October 22 at 11:00 AM. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery where she will be laid

to rest alongside her parents. In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation to any animal support

organization of your choice. Following are a few of her favorites: Hooves 'n Paws, Animal

Rescue, Speak up for Horses, Second Chances for Blind Dogs, Equine Voices Rescue, Little

Long Ears, Happy Cat and MSPCA.
