Obituary

Martin Kent Gunther, 83, of Plymouth, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, at BID Hospital surrounded by the love of his family - the people who meant the most to him.

Born in Plymouth on June 10, 1942, Marty was the son of the late Harvey and Laura (Saldati) Gunther. A lifelong Plymouth resident, he graduated from Plymouth High School in 1960 and later attended East Coast Aero Tech in Connecticut.

Marty will be remembered for his quick wit, hardworking spirit, and the kindness he showed to everyone he met, but above all else, he will be remembered as a devoted family man. His greatest happiness came from the time he spent with his loved ones. He was a loving and dedicated husband, a caring father, and an incredibly proud grandfather who cherished every moment with his family. Whether sharing stories, making everyone laugh, or simply being present for the people he loved, Marty made those around him feel supported, cared for, and deeply loved.

For 60 years, Marty shared a loving marriage with his wife, Sandra (Fortini) Gunther. Together they built a life centered around family, loyalty, hard work, and love. He was endlessly proud of his daughters, Amy (Gunther) Medeiros and her husband Stephen, and Sara (Gunther) Herbst and her husband Jason. His granddaughters - Taylor and Kaylee Gendron, Olivia Medeiros, and Maeve Herbst - were truly the light of his life and brought him immeasurable joy.

Throughout his life, Marty dedicated himself to providing for his family and serving his community through many years of honest work. Over the years, he worked for Reliable Fence, owned and operated his own trucking business, worked for NJ Fortini and Son, and proudly served the Town of Plymouth from 1982 until his retirement in 2004. Never one to sit still, he also owned and operated a landscaping business from 2002 to 2023. No matter how hard he worked, his family always came first.

Outside of work, Marty enjoyed motorcycle riding and RV camping at seasonal campgrounds in New Hampshire and Maine, creating many cherished memories with family and friends along the way.

He is also survived by his sisters, Barbara (Gunther) Holmes and Lois (Gunther) McAuley, as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Marty's legacy is one of unwavering love for his family, hard work, generosity, humor, and kindness. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

A celebration of Marty' s life will take place on May 30 from 11 AM to 2 PM at the Hilltop Pavilion, located at 65 Pottle Street in Kingston, MA. Rather than sending flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to a scholarship fund established in Marty's memory. Please make checks payable to Sandra Gunther for the Martin Gunther Memorial Scholarship Fund.
