Slipped into eternity surrounded by her loved ones on Saturday March 19th.
Born in 1934, she was the daughter of Gertrude and George Bassett of Buzzards Bay. One of 7 siblings. She was educated in Bourne Schools and graduated from Bourne High School in 1952. After her graduation she married George W Hodge formerly of Sheffield, Ohio. The couple had 4 children together; Robert, who later married Maureen Murphy of Sagamore Beach, where they resided and had a daughter, Angela, Michael who later moved to Bradenton, Florida; Sheila who married, had a son; Stephen, and a daughter; Heather and later married Donald Dostie of Buzzards Bay. She also a daughter; Dottie who married Michael Kelly of Wareham; together, they had 5 children: two daughters, Erin and Caryn, and three sons, Patrick, Jason, and Shane.
Mary worked for many years at the H L Bouton Company in Buzzards Bay, and then as a private housekeeper and later at the A&P Supermarket in Pocasset until her retirement.
Mary was predeceased by her three older siblings; her brothers George and Everett and her sister Dottie who was married to Leslie Manter of Wareham, who predeceased her. She leaves behind two very special sister-in laws Mineko, who was married to George, and Belle, who was married to Everett, both of Bourne. She is also survived by three loving sisters, Ruth who married Ugo Ferrari of Sagamore, Betty, who married James Chapman of Buzzards Bay, and Barbara who lost her husband, David McGinty of Kissimmee, Florida. Mary is also survived by numerous neices , nephews, and cousins.
She especially enjoyed her weekly visits to Mineko's Beauty Salon where she would meet her sisters and friends for special "ladies time". One of her greatest joys was getting together for family dinners at special times, and the many parties for her 8 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren who she really adored.
During her last year, in particular, Mary enjoyed attending church at Tabernacle of Praise in Wareham, where she became, one of the family, and formed strong loving bonds . Mary was an avid reader and had at times vast collections of mysteries, romances, and dramas… she also exhausted the local libraries supply of novels, constantly looking for new authors to broaden her horizens. She was quite humorous at times, especially toward the end and certainly had a vivid imagination.
The love of Mary's life was "Peanut". Peanut was her 12 year old little pet Chihuahua. She adopted a rescue cat named, "Tigger" who gave Peanut a run for her money, as she vied for Mary's affection. Her loves provided her with hours of enjoyment and animation.
Mary lived in Bourne for most of her life, up until her last year and a half when she moved to Centerville to live with her daughter, Dottie.
She leaves behind numerous friends and acquaintances….
And now she has slipped away from us here, and gone on to her eternal home where she will be reunited with her loved ones who have gone before her; into the arms of the One who loves her most; her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ……….
