Nellie Youngman Barboza, age 91, of Kingston, formerly of Plymouth and Duxbury, passed away on August 14, 2013 with her family by her side. She was the daughter of the late Mary (Vaz) and Daniel Souza Youngman.
Nellie was educated in the Plymouth schools and graduated in 1940 from Plymouth High School. She was married to the late Armando Barboza in 1944. They lived in Plymouth and Duxbury for many years.
Her first job was as a secretary at the Cordage Co. in North Plymouth. She was also employed by the South Shore Community Action Council. Nellie worked until retirement at the Plymouth County Superior Court. Later in life, in her "retirement years," Nellie took a job to fill her time, as a limo driver for Fancy Flair Limousine. Her sparkling personality brought joy to the many friends and acquaintances she made while driving the "big white limo."
Nellie was a member of the Portuguese-American Civic League, Holy Ghost Society and the Portuguese Federation. She and her husband were instrumental in aiding Portuguese immigrants, by acting as translators, preparing them for citizenship, obtaining home loans and teaching them the English language. Her culinary skills were wide spread with her expertise, running from extravagant desserts to homemade pizza. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter. She and her husband enjoyed both foreign and domestic travel.
Nellie is survived by her 3 children, MaryAnn MacLeod of Plymouth, Christine Karle and her husband Sam of Hesperia, CA and Paul Barboza and his wife Heather of Olathe, KS. Nellie was the proud and loving grandmother of 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandsons. She will be missed by all of them. She also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Nellie was the eldest of 6 children. Her four remaining siblings are Peggy Arena, Daniel Youngman, Doris Pederzani and Diana Connor, all of Plymouth. She was preceded in death by her brother, John Youngman.
Funeral arrangements will be made by the Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court Street, Plymouth. Calling hours will be on Friday, August 23, 2013 from 4:00-7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held at St. Mary's Church on Saturday, August 24, 2013 at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
