IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Peter Quinn
Smith
February 22, 1951 – January 21, 2025
Peter Quinn Smith passed away in his 73rd year, peacefully, at dawn on Tuesday, January 21, with his wife Judy Smith at his side after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. Peter was born in 1951, in the town of Worcester and was the son of the late Reginald Smith, a professor at the College of the Holy Cross, and Gloria Sargent Smith, a social worker. Peter grew up in Paxton, MA, and loved summering on the Cape, in the waters and on the beaches of Bass River and Yarmouth Port, with his family and friends.
Peter was Irish, and very proud of his heritage. Peter's connectedness to Ireland fostered a life-long interest and love of all things Irish, including most genres of music, as well as a fascination with Cape history and the American experience. Peter's love of history and the influence of his parents encouraged him to contribute to his community, which he did throughout his life. He was particularly proud of his involvement in the restoration of Thacher Hall, in Yarmouth Port, MA, which exemplifies Peter's love of history, art and community.
Peter didn't do anything halfway. It was all or nothing, do it right, or not at all. He was friendly and wonderful to be around, and connected with people from all walks of life. He had a keen sense of humor and it was fun to be in his company.
Peter was an alum of The College of the Holy Cross, which he loved and supported in a variety of ways during his life. Many of his lifelong friendships were forged during his years there.
Peter was a career banker for nearly 40 years. He served as Vice President of Summit Bank in Oakland, Ca., Cape Cod Bank & Trust and The Cooperative Bank of Cape Cod. He dedicated his work life to supporting and serving small local businesses.
Peter was also a dedicated public servant, serving as a board member on numerous committees, including Coastal Community Capital, the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod, Holy Cross Club of Cape Cod, the Yarmouth New Church Preservation Foundation and was honored to be a Selectman in the Town of Yarmouth from 2022-2024.
Peter's survivors include: his wife of 41 years, Judy Price Smith, Yarmouth Port, MA, his sons Kelley Smith, (s. Megan) Oak Ridge, TN, and Quinn Smith, (s. Barbara) West Yarmouth, MA. He is also survived by his siblings, Jeffrey Smith, (s. Cyndee) Yarmouth Port, MA, Susan Smith Grainger, (s. Steve) Wickford, R.I., Michael Smith, (s. Pam) Holden, MA, three granddaughters, Josephine, Olive and Lillian, nieces, nephews and a multitude of dear friends, including his lifelong best friends David Garabrant and his wife, Janet.
A celebration of Peter's life will be held at Thacher Hall (formerly the Yarmouth New Church) 266 Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, MA, at Strawberry Lane from 2pm - 5pm on what was to be his 74th birthday, Saturday February 22, 2025. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Peter's memory may be made to Thacher Hall "for Restoration of the Pipe Organ".
