Obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Richard J. "Dick" Walsh on Sunday, November 9th.

Richard was the cherished son of the late Joseph E. and Phyllis A. Walsh, born in Boston, Massachusetts. He grew up in the St. Mark's Parish Neighborhood of Dorchester, where his passion for firefighting was ignited. Around 1959, the Walsh family relocated to Quincy, settling in the Wollaston neighborhood. Here, Richard continued his lifelong avocation with the fire department, eventually rising to the rank of Chief of the Auxiliary Squad through the Civil Defense Program. He graduated from North Quincy in 1964 and proudly declared that he lettered in Track & Field.

Richard was truly a Renaissance Man, working at Raymond's Department Store, the City of Quincy Public Works Department and Howard Johnson's. He was particularly proud to have worked on the recovery craft built at General Dynamics for the Apollo Missions. Eventually, he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the MBTA. He had a distinguished career on the Red Line, eventually becoming the Number One Inspector along the Quincy Branch.

In 1978, Richard married the love of his life, Carol (Irwin). The couple eventually settled in Quincy, where they welcomed their adored son, Richard Jr. (Ricky), in 1981.

Dick was an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as the Grand Knight of the Greater Quincy KofC 2259. He was proud to be a member of the 4th Degree, along with his son, as members of the Richard Cardinal Cushing Assembly.

Dick, like his father and son, had his fair share of health issues due to Neurofibromatosis, a neurological disorder. Despite these challenges, he persevered throughout his remarkable life. For over forty years, as a family, they worked tirelessly to raise funds and awareness for NF.

Dick had a lifelong love of traveling with his family. They embarked on several trips to Disney World, multiple cruises to Bermuda, road trips to Pennsylvania, Cape Cod and Vermont. They also enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Alaska.

Known for his love of Christmas, Dick was passionate about decorating their house, especially with his Department 56 North Pole Village. He and Carol attended multiple Annual Santa Claus Conventions on Cape Cod.

Although Dick was a quiet man, he had a profound impact on everyone he met. His humor and kindness made him beloved, and everyone has their favorite story about him.

He is survived by his wife of over 47 years, Carol; his adored son, Ricky and his daughter-in-law, Caitlin of Ayer. He is also survived by his lifelong friend and best buddy, Stephen Badger of Weymouth, as well as several cousins.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the devoted team at Life Care of Plymouth. Especially over the past three weeks, we have truly felt their love and support, particularly the team on the Standish Wing.

"In lieu of flowers donations in his honor can be made to the Children's Tumor Foundation code: 6895, PO Box 7247; Philadelphia, PA 19107"
