Obituary

At age 82, Robert Arthur Barnhart, a 55-year resident of Third Cliff, Scituate and briefly of the Village at Duxbury, died November 8, 2013, of Alzheimer's. He loved boats and lived near the ocean. He sailed across the Atlantic with his brother Richard and at the age of 70 sailed the Intracoastal Waterway with his wife Linda, from Massachusetts to Florida and back. Robert enjoyed music and for 20 years sang, along with his wife, in The Choral Art Society. Robert was born September 12, 1931, while his father was managing a 10,000 bird turkey ranch in Kansas. After a year the family moved back to Concord, MA, where his father drove a milk truck for the Verrill Dairy Farm, which still exists as a working farm but without the dairy herd. Robert grew up there and in Acton and graduated from Acton High school in 1950. He entered Harvard College and graduated in 1954 after working 35 hours/week to pay for whatever scholarships did not cover. In June 1954 he received an ROTC commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers and married Linda Johnson, Radcliffe BA 1955. He served at Fort Belvoir, VA, from 1954 to 1956. They spent 1956 to 1958 at Harvard Business School, from which he received an MBA in 1958, and they moved to Scituate. Robert's employment included two years at Bethlehem Steel's Quincy Shipyard and the next two at Alden Products in Brockton. He then worked for several management consulting firms, for the last of which, as VP Finance, he negotiated its profitable sale. Robert A. Barnhart was the son of the late Leroy F. Barnhart and Rachel (Cole) Barnhart. His siblings include Leroy F. Barnhart, Jr., of Cornelius, OR, the late Phyllis (Barnhart) Tosti, Richard B. Barnhart of Millington, TN, and Carolyn (Barnhart) Jeannotte of Ocala, FL. Robert's widow Linda (Johnson) Barnhart resides in the Village at Duxbury. Robert and Linda's children include Valerie and Vivian Barnhart of North Scituate and Bruce and his wife Rohani (Manap) Barnhart of Third Cliff, Scituate. Grandchildren are Natalia, Sophia, Katrina, and Benjamin Barnhart of Third Cliff, Scituate. A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., November 23, at the First Trinitarian Congregational Church UCC, 381 Country Way, Scituate, MA, followed by burial in the Memorial Garden there. A later Memorial Service for the extended family will be held during the Barnhart Family Reunion in July.
