Obituary

Robert "Bob" Blackwell passed away on Monday, May 25, 2020, a day shy of his 61st birthday. Born May 26,1959 to Clarence and Enis (Amaral) Blackwell, Bob spent most of his life in and around Plymouth. It was in his earliest years that he developed his deep love for and connection to the sea. Bob, like his father and grandfather before him, grew up on the ocean; fishing and working on boats. He was always a hardworking man, buying his first boat at the age of twelve. After attending Plymouth schools, Bob proudly joined the Coast Guard. From there he worked as Assistant Harbormaster for both Scituate and Plymouth, and Harbormaster for the town of Kingston. Bob served more than 20 years as a marine traffic controller for the US Army Corps of Engineers at the Cape Cod Canal until his retirement in 2019. Not only was Bob a Freemason, he was also a member of the American Legion Post 40, where he rode with the Legion Riders. Bob was a commercial fisherman for many years, eventually earning his Captain's License. Bob had an innate confidence and capability on the water, a gift he shared with all who knew him; especially those lucky enough to have had the honor of being with him at sea. He was a brilliant and well-respected fisherman and sea captain. It was while working on the Captain John Boats that Bob earned the nickname "The Codfather" for he could always land on the fish. Bob was truly at home and at peace when he was on a boat. Bob touched the lives of all he encountered. He was a kind, gentle soul with an enormous heart, uncanny sense of humor, and quick wit. His warmth naturally drew people to him. He was an extraordinarily brave and proud man who will be sorely, sorely missed. Lovingly known as Cappy, he is survived by his beloved daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Michael Souza; his sister Kathy Silvia; his brother and sister-in-law, James and Pia Blackwell; his inherited children Jillian and Matthew Jordan; his grandson, Sam, who always kept his Cappy on his toes and put a smile on his face, and his best friend and companion, Lori Jordan, whom he loved and cherished deeply. Bob is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and countless friends. A memorial at sea will be scheduled for a later date. We will put a post on Facebook when we have more details..
