Obituary

Russell Hayden Gillis, 80, passed away unexpectedly on August 27, 2025, in Brewster, Massachusetts. Born on October 19, 1944, in Milton, Massachusetts, Russell lived a full and vibrant life enriched by his many passions and talents.

A graduate of Milton High School, Russell dedicated his entire professional career to the engineering department at Union Gear and Sprocket of Quincy. His long-standing commitment to his work reflected a deep sense of loyalty and craftsmanship that defined much of his life.

Russell was known for his sharp wit and wicked sense of humor, qualities that endeared him to those around him. He had a lifelong love for music and was a gifted singer and musician. Whether playing the guitar, banjo, or piano, or lending his voice to barbershop quartets, choruses, chorales, a doo-wop a cappella group, folk songs, or classical pieces, Russell found joy in sharing music with others.

His interests extended beyond music into the world of mechanics and metal fabrication. A skilled craftsman with an eye for detail and a passion for precision, he also had a deep appreciation for stock car racing—a pastime that brought him and his wife excitement and camaraderie throughout the years.

Russell is survived by his beloved wife, Marjory Gillis; his daughter Judith Wiseman and her husband Christopher Wiseman; and his cherished grandchildren Andrew Wiseman, Julia Wiseman, and Garrett Wiseman. He also leaves behind his sister Bonnie Winchester; half-brothers Brian Gillis and Barry Gillis; half-sister Carol MacIntosh; and nieces Robin Pulsifer, Amy Burrow, Holly Garcia and Melanie Winchester.

He was predeceased by his son, Andrew Duncan Gillis, sister Barbara Burrow and half-sister Linda Blandin.

Russell's legacy lives on through the memories shared by those who knew him best—his family, friends, colleagues, and fellow musicians. May his memory bring comfort to all who mourn his passing. A Memorial Gathering will be held on September 12, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 02:00 PM at the Kettle-Ho Restaurant 12 School St Cotuit MA 02635
