Russell G McGilvray, loving husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 72.
Russell was born on September 13, 1949, in Boston, MA, the son of the late Ronald J and Rita L (Menz) McGilvray of Jamaica Plain.
Russell graduated with the Class of 1967 from Boston English High. He was a Vietnam era Veteran of the United States Army deployed in Germany. He later received a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and Management from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. He worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as Deputy Director, Right of Way Bureau, MassDOT for many years and continued in later years as a Right of Way Consultant at O. R. Colan Associates.
On December 29, 1969, he married the love of his life Kathleen Cronin of Jamaica Plain and raised three sons, Timothy, Jason, and Jonathan. He was also the proud grandfather of Flynn, Patrick, Owen, Lilly, Lila, Sophia, Marina and Remy, all of whom adored him.
Russell was a wonder to behold as a boy growing up in Boston, and the second in the McGilvray clan of eight children, he took on the job as defender and champion of his brothers and sisters. Woe unto those who challenged the trust of "Danger-Russ". Later in life this role prepared him to be a family-man second to none.
Russell learned how to play Chess from his father and was soon a master, leaving his dad and many a challenger shaking their heads as he closed in on their King. He loved music, from the 60's of course, and enjoyed fishing for striped bass all along the Massachusetts shoreline.
Russell is survived by Kathleen, his wife of 52 years and his sons and their spouses Timothy and Elizabeth McGilvray, Jason and Danielle McGilvray, and Jonathan McGilvray.
He also leaves his brothers Ronald and Roy McGilvray and sisters Ruth Holmes, Rita Offen, Robin Saulnier,
Renee Flaherty and Regina Gilpatric, along with many nieces and nephews all of whom will miss him dearly.
"Like beautiful sunsets, good men cannot escape without great notice." Ron McGilvray
