Obituary for Stanley Louis Barnes

November 18, 1942 - July 7, 2025

Stanley (Stan) Louis Barnes, 82, passed away on July 7, 2025, in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

Born November 18, 1942, in Ontario, Oregon, and raised in Boise, Idaho, Stan joined the U.S. Navy at age 18 and went on to serve for 23 years, rising to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer with a specialty in naval intelligence. His career took him to duty stations around the world, including Anchorage, Alaska; Guam; Vietnam during wartime; London, England; the Panama Canal Zone; Norfolk, Virginia; and finally Washington, D.C.

After retiring from the Navy in 1985, Stan transitioned into a second career in the defense industry in the Washington, D.C. area, where he continued to apply his experience and expertise to matters of national security.

He earned a bachelor's degree from Florida State University and a master's degree from the University of Oklahoma. He was known for his discipline, sharp mind, and unwavering commitment to his work.

Stan was an avid golfer. During their retirement, he and Ann spent summers on Cape Cod and winters in Naples, Florida, where they were active members of Glen Eagle Golf & Country Club. They marked milestones together, including their 50th wedding anniversary in 2016.

Stan lived a life of honor, humility, and generosity - a life rooted in service. While not always easy to know, he remained fiercely loyal to his values and those closest to him. His presence will be remembered with respect and reflection by those who knew him.

Stan is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann (Sherman) Barnes of Naples, Florida, and Plymouth, Massachusetts; son Chris and daughter-in-law Lori Barnes of Chantilly, Virginia; daughter Alyson and son-in-law Eamonn Johnston of New York City; and four grandchildren: Caroline, Lindsay, and Connor Barnes, and Hannah Johnston. He is also survived by his sister, Trish Awe of Boise, Idaho, and extended family members.

A private memorial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Stan's memory may be made to AMVETS or a veterans' charity or organization that supports military families.
