Obituary

Steve McCann, of Boston, formerly of Marshfield, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, April 26, 2021. Steve began life in 1955, in West Roxbury, the third child, and first son born to Dorothy & Richard McCann. His early life was full of extended and neighboring family and friends. By the age of six, Steven had a younger brother and two more sisters. A middle child, he was adored by those surrounding him. The family summered in Marshfield, crowding happily into a small cottage on Priscilla Road with their many relatives. Sand, surf, and picnics defined his early days. He was loving, generous, and kind. He was brilliant, creative and so very funny. The family moved to Marshfield year round when Steve was eight years old. The ocean, marshes, rivers and woods became his playground in childhood, the backdrop to his adventures in adolescence, and a great source of inspiration in his career as an artist. He became a boater, an avid gardener, and landscape artist. Steve's illustrations often depicted the beauty, intricacies, and magic of the natural world. Graduating Marshfield High School in 1973, Steve then earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art. He began his career as an illustrator with Hallmark Cards in Kansas City. Always a New Englander, Steve missed both family and ocean and eventually returned home to Boston. He continued to work as an illustrator, graphic artist, and event designer. Steve had a way of making the ordinary extraordinary; of making the special spectacular. He loved cooking, entertaining, music, dancing, and celebrating with family and friends whenever possible. Steven will be remembered by those who knew him for his brilliant creativity and humor, his quick wit, his generosity and kindness, and for his loyalty to friends and family. He spent a great deal of time making life fun and exciting for others. While Steve left us too soon, we take comfort in knowing he was painting and drawing until the end of his life. Steven was the much loved son of the late Richard and Dorothy(Johnson) McCann of Marshfield, MA. He will be deeply missed by his five siblings and their partners: Elizabeth St. Lawrence (& Joe Zorzin) of Orange, MA., Katherine and John Tamulevich of Hanson, MA., Paul and Maureen McCann of Bridgewater, MA., Carol and Joseph Shrand of Marshfield, MA., and Elsa and Ipamosa Amadin of Lake Forest, CA. He will also be missed by his beloved nieces and nephews: Sam (& Lauren) & Rachel Tamulevich; Sophie (& Brendan Mulhern), Jason, Galen & Rebecca Shrand; Evan, Connor (& Ari), Rory (& Garrett Rappazzo), Tristan & Tessa McCann: and Lincoln, Elijah & Dorothea Amadin. In honor of Steven, his love of summer, Marshfield, and a good party, the family will be having a Celebration of Life with family and friends in July.
