Steven Nelson Obituary

Steven E. Nelson, 78, passed away on February 27, 2025, in Leland, North Carolina. He was born on September 2, 1946, in Plymouth, Massachusetts, to Merrill Nelson and Pauline (Govoni) Nelson.

After graduating from Plymouth-Carver High School, Steven enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Nebraska, where he worked for Strategic Air Command. During this time, he met Margaret (Grant), and they married in Adair, Iowa, in 1967. They later returned to Plymouth, where they lived, worked, and raised their two children, Lori and Alan, for the next 56 years.

Steven began working as a custodian for Plymouth Public Schools in 1975 and dedicated 28 years to the district, eventually becoming the Assistant Supervisor of Building and Grounds. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in his younger years and played on their softball team. He also enjoyed time at the Seaside Club, where he played cribbage and bocce with friends.

In retirement, Steven and Margaret traveled extensively in their RV, visiting 48 states and reconnecting with friends and family along the way. When not on the road, he cherished time with his family, especially his two grandchildren. He had a passion for playing cards, Words with Friends, and trivia. A lifelong Boston sports fan, he followed all the teams closely and had the opportunity to see them play in person over the years-especially enjoying Bruins games at the old Boston Garden.

Steven was preceded in death by his father, Merrill S. Nelson, and his brothers, Michael Nelson and Paul Nelson. He is survived by his mother, Pauline Taddia; his wife, Margaret Nelson; his children, Alan Nelson and Lori Perrone; his son-in-law, John Perrone; his grandchildren, Kimberly Perrone and Alexander Perrone; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Bartlett Funeral Home, 338 Court St., Plymouth, Massachusetts. A graveside service will follow at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Buzzards Bay. Please come to share stories as we remember him.

Donations in memory of Steven can be made to the Tunnels to Towers Foundation
