Obituary

William N. Matheson, Jr., of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully on September 12, 2025, surrounded by his family.

Born and raised in Arlington, MA Bill was the son of the late Lillian Button and William N. Matheson, Sr. He was a graduate of Arlington High School and Bridgewater State College. Bill excelled on the football field at both schools and had been scouted by the New York Jets. He remained a loyal and active Bear following college, attending their games both home and away and serving on the football advisory committee.

A devoted husband, father, and friend, Bill is survived by his wife Janice; his daughter Katie Matheson and her husband Daniel Mueller; and his son Liam Matheson and his fiancée Nirma Arun. His dog Bentley was a comforting companion by his side. Bill enjoyed watching his children grow, attending their events and was enormously proud of their achievements.

Bill dedicated his career to education, teaching Social Studies at Mattacheese Middle School. Many of his students have said that he was their favorite teacher which is a testament to his character. He was also the Director of Education for the Barnstable House of Corrections. In retirement, Bill worked as a staff member for Capabilities where he enjoyed interacting with the clients and going on day trips.

Beyond his work and family, Bill enjoyed working in the yard, reading, especially about the Civil War and anything history related, doing Sudoku, going to the YMCA and his weekly Friday trips to Cape Cod Beer. He was an avid fan of the New England Patriots, the Boston Red Sox, the Boston Celtics and Penn State football.

The family wants to thank the staff of VNA Hospice, especially Scott his home health aide. The conversations about the upcoming football season, both professional and college passed the time quickly. Grateful thanks to his friends, Carl Zopatti and Bob Vadeboncoer who enabled Bill to get out to various activities and events including the Friday Grumpy Old Men breakfast.

For those wishing to pay their respects, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Sons of Erin Cape Cod, 633 MA 28 West Yarmouth, MA 02673 on Sunday November 9, 2025, from 1-4 pm. A remembrance will be held at 2:00 pm to allow people to share their memories.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Bill's name to the Bridgewater State University Football program. Checks can be made payable to the BSU Foundation, with "Bear's Football Endowed Fund" in the memo section, and mailed to:
