Obituary for Kendall Porter Anderson
Kendall Porter Anderson, age 90, a longtime resident of Scituate and Nantucket, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, July 14, 2015 with his family at his side. He was the son of the late Alexander Anderson and Esther (Pearson) Anderson. Born and raised in Detroit, he attended the Henry Ford Trade School, which gave him a foundation to construct and repair nearly everything in his three homes during his lifetime. During World War II he attended the Navy’s V12 officer’s training program at Tufts and Harvard as well as Columbia University’s Midshipmen’s School, and it was then that he came to know and love New England. After the war he worked for Excello Corporation, an early developer of dairy packaging machines. In 1964, he became their sales representative for New England and moved from Michigan to Scituate. In 1973 he had the opportunity to purchase what had been the Whiting Milk Company’s depot on Nantucket. He and Shirley spent many vacations converting it to a family summer home, long enjoyed by family and friends. He was a long-time member of the Hatherly Country Club where he could be seen walking and carrying his clubs up to his 90th year.
He was the well-loved husband of Shirley (Chesterfield) for 65 years. He was a devoted and generous father and grandfather to Gary Anderson of Scituate, Linda Gardner (Anderson) and her husband, Garry Gardner, of Cohasset, Grace Gardner of Oakland, CA, Emma Gardner of Somerville, and Lucy Gardner of Brooklyn, NY, as well as his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Thelma Chesterfield, of Crystal Lake, IL, his friends for over 70 years. He will be greatly missed by his family, extended family and friends. A celebration of Kendall’s life is planned for October.
